The General Act of the Berlin Conference
​
In 1884, the Berlin Conference was convened to discuss African colonization, with the aim of setting up international guidelines for making claims to African land to avoid conflict between European powers.
​
With the common set of rules arising from Bismarck's negotiations in Berlin, the European powers could undertake their quest for Livingstone's “three C's” – Commerce, Christianity, and Civilisation – much more vigorously (Southall 2009:5).
